Crochet Grinch Hat Pattern (Free)

Crochet Grinch Hat Pattern (Free)

Ez has loved The Grinch since he first watched the Jim Carey version when he was 2 years old. Now aged 5, he chose a Grinchy Christmas jumper for his Christmas jumper day, and since I’d already made a Christmas hat for Asher, I decided to make Ezra a Grinchy hat to match his jumper. I was rushing to finish Ezra’s hat in time, and The Grinch’s eyebrows came out looking surprised rather than Christmas hating. I fixed them the next day and now the hat really embodies the essence of The Grinch. It is one of my favourite hats that I’ve made and it inspired me to design a few more fluffy hats, which I will release the patterns for in 2025.

Materials:

  • 3 skeins of Pretty Jolly faux fur yarn (warm green)
  • James C. Brett Flutterby (in colours lemon and pewter)
  • 8mm hook for the base of the hat (I like a tighter tension on my hats because they stretch out over time)
  • 4mm hook for the face details
  • Scissors
  • Needle for sewing face details and weaving in ends

You may need to do more or less rows than I have used, depending on the size of the hat that you want to achieve.

Assembly:

Position the pewter circle into the middle of the lemon eye and sew. Using the darning needle, sew the eyes between rows 8-10, roughly 7 stitches apart.

The eyebrows, nose and mouth will be sewn on using James c.Brett in pewter, and the darning needle.

Sew a T-shaped nose in between the eye, with the vertical line of the T reaching the brim of the hat.

Then sew on The Grinch’s mouth.

Sew The Grinch’s eyebrows on just above the eye. The eyebrow is sewn in two lines- the inner line, which is closer to the nose, and the outer line. Sew the inner line at a steep gradient, making sure this is the longest part of the eyebrow. The outer line should be much shorter. The eyebrows will look like an upside down tick.
